Visa Information – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

The page infprmation on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan's official website provides comprehensive details on Japan's visa policies, application procedures, and requirements. This resource is essential for foreign nationals planning to visit Japan for various purposes, including tourism, business, study, or long-term stays.

Key Visa Categories

  • Short-Term Stay: For stays up to 90 days for tourism, business, visiting friends or relatives, etc., that do not include remunerative activities. Applicants from certain countries are eligible to apply for a visa online through the Japan eVISA system. Countries eligible for online application include Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and the United States.

  • Work or Long-Term Stay: For individuals intending to work in Japan for remuneration or stay in Japan for more than 90 days. Applicants are generally required to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before applying for a visa at the Japanese diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over their place of residence.

  • Visa for Medical Stay: For individuals seeking medical treatment in Japan. Specific requirements and procedures apply, and applicants should consult the Japanese diplomatic mission for detailed information.

  • Visa Exemptions for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders: Certain holders of diplomatic and official passports may be exempt from visa requirements. However, if they intend to visit Japan for purposes other than official business, such as tourism or transit, they will be granted the status of residence of "Temporary Visitor" and will not be exempt from providing fingerprints and other biometric information at the time of landing examination.

Application Procedures

Applicants are advised to prepare all required documents and submit their visa applications through the Japanese diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over their place of residence. The application process may vary depending on the applicant's nationality and the purpose of the visit. It is recommended to consult the website of the relevant Japanese embassy or consulate for specific instructions.

Visa Application Documents

Required documents typically include:

  • Visa application form

  • Passport-sized photographs

  • Passport (valid for the duration of the stay)

  • Letter of guarantee and/or invitation letter (depending on the type of visa)

  • Travel itinerary

  • Other documents as specified by the Japanese diplomatic mission

Applicants should refer to the specific requirements outlined by the Japanese diplomatic mission where they will submit their application.

Visa Processing Time

Visa processing typically takes approximately one week, provided that all necessary requirements are met. Additional documents may be required on a case-by-case basis, and processing times may be longer if the Japanese diplomatic mission deems it necessary to consult with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.

Contact Information

For inquiries about visas, applicants should contact the "Foreign Residents Support Center (FRESC) MOFA Visa Information" or the "Japan Visa Information Hotline" listed on the website of the Japanese embassy or consulate where they will submit their application. Detailed information can be found on the website of the Diplomatic Mission of Japan with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence.
