Indian students aspiring to study in the United States are facing renewed challenges due to recent changes in the US visa screening process. The new guidelines, introduced by the US government, mandate all applicants — including F-1 student visa seekers — to set their social media profiles to public as part of an expanded vetting procedure.
Background: Visa Policy Changes
Amid ongoing scrutiny under enhanced immigration policies, Indian students in the US have already encountered several hurdles. These include revocation of F-1 visas, cancellation of student records under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), and restrictions on re-entry into the country. Although earlier punitive actions were rolled back and SEVP records reinstated for some students following backlash, the newly imposed visa rules have created further anxiety.
Concern Raised in Parliament
During the Monsoon Session 2025, the issue was brought up in the Rajya Sabha through an unstarred question. Lawmakers sought clarification on the steps the Indian government is taking to ensure that Indian students and professionals are not unfairly targeted or subjected to arbitrary delays due to the new US visa screening measures.
Government of India’s Response
The Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs responded, citing a press release issued by the US Department of State on 18 June 2025 titled “Announcement of Expanded Screening and Vetting for Visa Applicants.”
According to the release, the US has broadened its vetting processes to include all available information — including applicants’ online presence — for those seeking F, M, and J non-immigrant visas. Applicants are now required to set all social media accounts to public visibility as part of this comprehensive screening.
The US government emphasized that visa adjudication is inherently tied to national security, and applicants must convincingly demonstrate that their intentions align with the visa category for which they are applying.
India’s Position
While acknowledging that visa issuance policies fall under the sovereign jurisdiction of individual nations, the Indian government stated that it remains actively engaged with the US to promote secure and mutually beneficial mobility arrangements. These include efforts to streamline legal pathways for students, professionals, short-term tourists, and business travelers.
Additionally, the Government of India continues to collaborate with US authorities to combat illegal immigration and human trafficking, with a focus on addressing the role of criminal networks and facilitators involved in such activities.
