The United States Embassy in India on Tuesday issued a stern advisory warning against illegal entry into the U.S., cautioning that such actions could result in detention, deportation, and permanent ineligibility for future U.S. visas.
In an official statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the embassy stated, “The United States has increased enforcement of immigration laws and removal of illegal aliens. Illegal entry into the United States will lead to detention, deportation, and permanent consequences for future visa eligibility.”
The embassy further warned that individuals attempting to enter the U.S. illegally risk undertaking a “costly and dangerous journey” that could end in imprisonment or deportation, along with a permanent record of immigration violation.
The advisory comes a day after the U.S. government introduced new visa rules requiring Indian applicants for student visas to make their social media profiles publicly accessible. The updated policy, which took effect immediately, applies to all F, M, and J visa categories.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the policy aims to enhance national security and public safety by enabling consular officers to review applicants’ online presence. Students are now being urged to adjust their social media privacy settings accordingly.
This move is part of a broader tightening of U.S. immigration policy. Last month, the U.S. State Department temporarily paused visa interview appointments to implement stricter background checks, placing a heightened focus on applicants' digital activity and potential political affiliations.
Student visa interviews resumed on June 18, following the completion of these procedural changes.
