Studying in New Zealand Made Easier for Students with Indian Qualifications

New Zealand has officially recognized degrees from India, France, Germany, Italy, Sri Lanka, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, and Switzerland, exempting them from the requirement of an International Qualification Assessment (IQA). This move is part of Immigration New Zealand’s updated LQEA, which took effect on 23 June 2025.

What Is an IQA?
International students usually need an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) to demonstrate that their overseas qualifications are equivalent to New Zealand standards. This assessment is typically required when applying for visas such as the:

  • Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa
  • Accredited Employer Work Visa
  • Green List Visa

However, some qualifications are exempt from IQA, including:

  • Engineering degrees accredited under the Washington or Sydney Accord
  • Qualifications listed on the LQEA for visa purposes

Benefits for Indian Students
With Indian degrees now included in the exemption list, students applying for New Zealand study visas no longer need an IQA, making the application process quicker and more streamlined. This change is expected to encourage even more Indian students to choose New Zealand for their higher education.

Rise in Indian Student Enrolments
New Zealand continues to be a favored study destination for Indian students. Between January and August 2024, enrolments from India rose by 34%, reaching 10,640 students, compared to 7,930 for the full year in 2023.

According to Piyush Kumar, Regional Director (South Asia, Canada & LATAM) at IDP Education, the cost-effectiveness of New Zealand’s education system, along with affordable living expenses, makes it an attractive option. Annual tuition and living costs range between NZD 20,000 and NZD 40,000, which is more affordable than studying in the US or UK and comparable to Australia and Canada.

Post-Study Work Opportunities
New Zealand also offers generous post-study work (PSW) opportunities. Students who complete at least 30 weeks of Master’s or Doctoral studies in New Zealand are eligible for a three-year PSW visa. Additionally, those who complete a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma (Level 8) and then move on to a shorter Master’s program are still eligible for the full PSW duration.
