A student from the Democratic Republic of Congo has shared his disheartening experience after being denied a U.S. F-1 student visa for the second time, despite having a well-defined academic plan and confirmed university admission.
The student, who had an interview scheduled at 8:00 a.m. at the U.S. Embassy in Congo, recounted the ordeal online. He described a tense atmosphere at the embassy, noting that the visa officer rejected 23 applicants before him and granted approval to only two B1/B2 (business/tourist) visa seekers.
He has been accepted into the Computer Science program at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston), where he planned to develop expertise in technologies like JavaScript, HTML, and Kotlin. According to him, these skills are essential for contributing to his father’s expanding tourism business back home in Congo.
Tough Questions on Academics and Finances
During the interview, the visa officer questioned his university selection, suggesting his answers were “too generic.” When asked if he had considered other institutions, the student cited Lesley University and Simmons University but explained that UMass Boston offered a more robust computer science curriculum.
Financially, he stated that his father — who serves as a regional governor, pastor, and businessman — would fully sponsor his education. The officer probed further into his family situation, including whether he had siblings or was an only child. Despite responding to all inquiries, the officer ultimately ended the interview with the words, “Sorry, I can’t approve.”
A Final Attempt Before September Deadline
With classes set to begin on September 2nd, the student plans to make one final attempt to secure the visa. He has since reached out to others online for advice and support, hoping his third interview will lead to a positive outcome.
His case reflects growing concern among international students over rising visa denials, particularly as deadlines approach and opportunities hang in the balance.
