Amid growing concerns over heightened Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity across the U.S., many H-1B visa holders are adjusting their daily routines to stay prepared. From carrying passports to keeping copies of I-797 approval notices and I-94 forms, foreign professionals are adopting cautious practices—even if not legally required.
The conversation gained momentum after a viral social media post sparked widespread discussion among international workers. Dozens of users shared their personal strategies for staying ready in case of unexpected ICE encounters, highlighting both fear and practical preparedness in immigrant communities.
Although U.S. law doesn’t mandate carrying original immigration documents at all times, many visa holders report that having physical or digital copies on hand—especially while commuting or traveling—offers reassurance.
“Photocopies in every bag”
One commenter wrote, “Take a photocopy of your passport and I-94. I keep one set in my car, one in my office bag.” Another advised, “Carry your driver’s license or state ID and a printout of your latest I-94. If traveling out of state, consider bringing your passport too.”
Others opt for digital documentation. “I’ve scanned my I-797 and I-94 and keep digital copies on my phone and cloud storage,” one user noted. “I don’t carry my originals, but I’ve traveled through both red and blue states—urban and rural—and haven’t faced any issues.”
The advice to obtain a REAL ID also came up frequently. “Get a REAL ID and keep it with you,” one commenter recommended. “I travel a lot and never once carried my passport. Soft copies of everything else are enough.”
Balancing caution with reality
While some respondents expressed genuine concern over enforcement unpredictability, others pushed back against what they saw as unnecessary fear. “Fear mongering at its peak, lol,” one user said. “Nothing has changed for legal immigrants who follow the rules and don’t commit crimes.”
Still, with immigration policy constantly evolving and enforcement practices varying by region, many professionals on temporary visas say they prefer to err on the side of caution. For now, carrying extra documentation—whether physical or digital—has become a new norm for peace of mind.
