PTE English Test Requirement Update for 2026 Semester 1 Admissions

As we continue through the admissions process for Semester 2, 2025, here are the latest updates and critical information that will assist you in navigating through the recruitment season for 2026.

Changes to PTE English Test Requirement for Semester 1, 2026

In line with a comprehensive review of the PTE English Test, the University has decided to adjust the PTE entry requirements across all programs. This change, approved by the Academic Board, aims to align the university’s standards with other leading institutions and ensure stronger English proficiency among applicants. The new PTE requirements will be effective from Friday, 9 May 2025 for applications submitted for Semester 1, 2026 intake and onwards.

Scenarios for Change:
Direct Applications:

  • For applications submitted on or after 9 May 2025, the new PTE requirements will apply.
  • For applications submitted before 9 May 2025, the old requirements will apply if the PTE test report was received before this date. If the report is received on or after 9 May 2025, the new requirements will apply.

Deferral Requests:

  • For conditional offers with unmet English requirements, the new PTE requirements will apply if the deferral request is made on or after 9 May 2025.
  • For deferrals with met English Language Proficiency (ELP), the previous assessment will be honoured.

Centre for English Teaching (CET):

  • Students applying for CET packaged offers before 9 May 2025 will be assessed under the old PTE requirements, while after this date, the new requirements apply.

Special Circumstances:

  • Specific conditions are outlined for CET students and others with pathway programs. Please review the updates carefully to understand how they apply to each scenario.

Acceptance of Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations

The University of Sydney will now accept Advanced Placement (AP) examinations in conjunction with a High School Diploma as evidence of academic qualifications for undergraduate admissions. This change takes effect immediately for applications submitted for Semester 1, 2026 onwards.

AP Requirements:

  • Applicants must submit at least 3 AP examinations, with scores of 3, 4, or 5 included for the aggregate calculation.
  • The High School Diploma must meet the required GPA for admission.

Changes to SAT & ACT Requirements for Undergraduate Admissions
The University will also apply new schedules for SAT and ACT scores starting Friday, 9 May 2025, for applications submitted for Semester 1, 2026 onwards.

  • Direct Applications: For applications submitted on or after 9 May 2025, the new SAT/ACT requirements will apply.
  • Deferral Requests: Deferrals with unmet SAT/ACT requirements will apply under the new schedule, while those with met requirements will follow the previous criteria.
