In a significant step towards democratizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) education in India, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched five new free AI courses on the SWAYAM Plus platform. This initiative is designed to make AI education accessible to learners from all academic backgrounds, without the need for prior coding experience.
The five newly introduced courses are:
These courses, which range between 25 to 45 hours in duration, are structured to be beginner-friendly while offering practical knowledge and hands-on experience with real-world data.
The course ‘AI in Physics’ covers the use of machine learning and neural networks in solving physics-based problems, with interactive labs and practical assignments.
‘AI in Chemistry’ focuses on how AI can assist in predicting molecular behavior and modeling chemical reactions, using real-world datasets and Python programming.
For commerce and management students, ‘AI in Accounting’ explores automation and data analysis in accounting processes, merging traditional concepts with modern AI tools.
One of the more unique offerings, ‘Cricket Analytics with AI’, uses real cricket match data to teach students data science and visualization through case studies—an ideal course for sports and data enthusiasts.
Lastly, ‘AI/ML using Python’ provides a foundational understanding of AI, machine learning, and Python programming. Key topics include statistics, linear algebra, optimization, and data visualization, all aimed at enabling students to apply their skills in real-world scenarios.
These courses are available for free on the SWAYAM Plus platform, and are open to students, teachers, and professionals alike. Registration is open until May 12, 2025, and while the courses come at no cost, participants can opt to receive a certificate for a nominal fee upon completion.
Importantly, the courses are aligned with India’s National Credit Framework (NCrF), meaning they can be recognized as credit-earning modules in academic institutions. This integration supports the government’s vision to enhance employability by equipping learners with industry-relevant AI skills.
This move by IIT Madras is part of a broader national effort to upskill the Indian workforce in response to the growing demand for professionals in AI-driven industries. With no prior programming or academic restrictions, these offerings aim to bridge the digital divide and prepare India’s youth for the AI-powered future.
