An Indian student with a strong academic background from IIT Guwahati recently shared his extraordinary F-1 visa experience on Reddit, revealing how his U.S. student visa was approved in just 30 seconds. He is set to pursue a second master's degree in Molecular Toxicology at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine, fully funded through a scholarship.
The student, who earned an MTech in Biotechnology from IIT Guwahati with an impressive CGPA of 9.04, attended his visa interview at 10:00 AM on June 23. He described the interaction as swift and smooth, crediting his confident yet thoughtful responses for the rapid approval.
When asked about the field of Molecular Toxicology, he provided a clear and relatable explanation. The visa officer, visibly impressed, further inquired about the nature of his scholarship. The student explained that it was awarded based on both academic excellence and strong personal essays.
What made his story particularly impactful was the advice he offered to other students preparing for visa interviews. He noted that six applicants before him were rejected, mainly due to vague or generic answers to questions like “Why this university?”
“Avoid scripted answers from university websites,” he advised. “Talk about what truly attracted you — maybe it’s the faculty, research opportunities, the community, or financial support. Personal touches make your story believable.”
He also highlighted the importance of staying prepared for unexpected questions, citing a fellow applicant’s denial for not knowing about Ann Arbor, the college town of the University of Michigan.
The student credited platforms like Argo Visa, Chai & Coaching, and ZF Visa on YouTube for helping him prepare. His parting advice was pointed:
“Visa officers work with a mindset of skepticism — assume you're guilty of having non-genuine intent until you prove otherwise. Speak clearly, confidently, and honestly.”
His story has since inspired many aspiring international students, serving as a reminder that preparation, authenticity, and calm communication are key to a successful visa interview.
