China came to a standstill on Saturday as 13.35 million students across the country sat for the Gaokao, the national university entrance exam that plays a major role in deciding their academic and career future. This year’s number is slightly lower than last year’s 13.42 million, according to official media reports.
The Gaokao, or National Higher Education Entrance Examination, is known for being one of the toughest and most competitive exams in the world. It is the key requirement for students hoping to get admission into Chinese universities. The pressure is immense—not only for students, but also for their families, many of whom view it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Like every year, parents gathered outside exam centres with flowers and well wishes, creating an emotional and supportive atmosphere. Many waited for hours to greet their children with food and hugs as they came out of the test halls.
To maintain order and ensure fairness, local governments and security forces implemented high-level safety measures. Police used drones and high-tech equipment to monitor exam centres, while some venues installed AI-powered surveillance systems that can detect cheating or suspicious behaviour in real time, according to state-run Xinhua.
Transportation departments across the country made special arrangements for students. Temporary traffic rules were introduced near test centres to keep roads clear. In many cities, free transport services were offered to help students reach exam venues without stress or delay.
Highlighting the importance of the exam, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang visited a middle school in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, during Gaokao day. He stressed the need for fairness and safety, urging all involved to support students during this life-changing event.
A report by Xinhua described Gaokao as a “powerful social equaliser”, saying it has changed millions of lives since it was brought back in 1977. The exam is based on merit and is seen as a way for any student, regardless of their background, to secure a better future through hard work and determination.
As of 2023, China’s gross enrolment rate in higher education had crossed 60%, with more than 47 million students attending colleges and universities. Each year, over 12 million graduates enter a job market that has been tightening due to economic slowdown.
Despite the challenges, the Gaokao remains a deeply respected and vital part of China's education system. For many families, it continues to symbolise hope, opportunity, and the belief that success can be earned through dedication.
