Private equity firm Brightstar Capital Partners has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a 50% stake in Arden University, a UK-based institution known for its digital-first approach to higher education.
The deal, reportedly valued at over $1 billion according to several media outlets, was struck with Global University Systems (GUS), Arden’s current majority owner. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.
As part of the agreement, Brightstar partner and co-chair Marcelo Claure is set to become chair of Arden University’s board, bringing his background in digital transformation and AI integration into the institution’s leadership.
Arden University, headquartered in Coventry, offers online and blended learning programs and operates multiple study centres across the UK. With a growing global student base of over 40,000, the university is preparing to begin offering UK-accredited degrees to international students starting next year. Arden already holds indefinite taught degree awarding powers in the UK.
Accelerating Growth and Innovation
Arden vice-chancellor and CEO Carl Lygo described the deal as an “exciting inflection point” in the university’s journey.
Claure, who reportedly led the negotiations with Arden and GUS, emphasised the university’s potential to transform student outcomes through technology.
Brightstar, which has recently sharpened its focus on AI integration across its portfolio, sees the investment as a significant step toward reshaping the future of education through technology.
The firm stated that the partnership aims to “supercharge digital innovation” at Arden, enabling the university to scale globally while delivering enhanced student services powered by intelligent technology.
Strategic Alignment on AI and Global Growth
Aaron Etingen, executive chairman and CEO of GUS, praised the alignment between Arden’s goals and Brightstar’s tech-forward strategy.
“Brightstar’s focus on AI makes it the ideal partner for this next chapter,” Etingen said. “This deal represents a pivotal moment for Arden, as we build a future of education that is flexible, accessible, and powered by intelligent technology.”
The partnership marks a significant vote of confidence in Arden’s unique model of digital higher education and reflects broader market interest in AI-driven, scalable learning platforms.
