An Indian student’s unexpected F-1 visa experience is sparking concern among international students applying from third countries. After attending a visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok on July 21, 2025, the student initially received an approval—only to later see their status change to “Refused.”
The student shared the experience on Reddit, prompting discussions among other applicants who are also considering or currently navigating the F-1 visa process outside their home country.
From Approval to Refusal Without Explanation
According to the student, the visa officer assured them during the interview that everything was in order. Later that day, the CEAC (Consular Electronic Application Center) portal reflected an “Approved” status. However, within 24 to 48 hours, the status was updated to “Refused.”
Adding to the confusion, the student did not receive a 221(g) slip, refusal letter, or any follow-up communication. Despite the refusal status, their passport remains with the embassy, and no additional documentation has been requested.
Possibility of Administrative Processing
The student suspects the case may have entered administrative processing, a common but often unclear step in some visa applications. “I’m hoping to hear from others who’ve gone through something similar—especially those who applied from a third country,” the student wrote online. “If your status changed from Approved to Refused, how long did it take to resolve? Has anyone else interviewed recently in Bangkok and is still waiting?”
Growing Uncertainty as Program Start Dates Approach
With academic programs set to begin soon, the uncertainty is causing stress for the student and others in similar situations. Many are now seeking clarity and shared experiences, particularly from those who interviewed at U.S. consulates outside their home country.
The case highlights growing concerns over the consistency and transparency of visa processing—especially for applicants pursuing interviews in third countries due to backlogs or delays in their home nations.
