An Indian applicant has shared her inspiring journey of perseverance after finally receiving a U.S. B2 tourist visa at the Mumbai Consulate, following two previous rejections. Her experience, now circulating on forums and social media, has resonated with others navigating the complexities of U.S. visa interviews.
The applicant's first attempt came during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time when she lacked stable employment. Her interview took place nearly a year and a half later, but she did not update her DS-160 form to reflect her changed job status, which ultimately led to a denial.
In her second attempt, she had a full-time job, was in a committed relationship, and was settled in India. However, she followed common advice to "keep answers short and only respond to what is asked," a tactic that backfired. The lack of elaboration left gaps in her narrative, and her visa was again rejected.
Refusing to give up, she thoroughly prepared for her third interview. She studied videos, practiced mock interviews, and made the decision to approach the process more authentically. This time, she opened up to the interviewing officer, detailing her personal story, strong ties to India, and the encouragement she received from her family to try again.
The visa officer listened attentively, asked follow-up questions, and gave her space to explain. While she was not immediately approved, she was handed a 221(g) slip, requesting her to submit copies of her parents’ approved U.S. visas.
Fortunately, her parents’ visa applications were processed shortly afterward with minimal questioning, as they were planning a visit to their son, who is studying in the United States. Once she submitted the required documents, her visa was finally approved.
Grateful for the outcome, the applicant praised the visa officer for her understanding and patience, and urged others to be genuine, transparent, and persistent in their own journeys.
