Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially unveiled the latest updates to the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for 2025. This family reunification initiative allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency in Canada, providing them with a pathway to live with their families and enjoy benefits such as healthcare and social support.
In the 2025 edition, IRCC has announced that they will accept 24,200 sponsorship applications, with the aim of approving 15,000 complete applications. This mirrors the structure of previous years but comes with enhancements aimed at reducing processing times and increasing efficiency.
One of the key changes for this year is the continued use of the 2020 interest to sponsor pool. Invitations to apply will be sent starting May 21, 2025, over a two-week period. Only those who had submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 and were not invited in the 2021–2024 intakes will be considered. This decision is intended to manage demand fairly and avoid overwhelming the system with new interest submissions.
Sponsorship Eligibility Requirements (2025):
To be eligible, sponsors must:
Be at least 18 years old.
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
Reside in Canada.
Meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for three consecutive taxation years.
Sign an undertaking to financially support the sponsored individuals for 20 years (10 years for Quebec).
The 2025 PGP continues to use the Permanent Residence Portal and the Representative Permanent Residence Portal for submitting applications, ensuring a more streamlined, secure, and digital application process. All applicants must submit their complete application within 60 days of receiving an invitation to apply.
For those not selected under the PGP, IRCC strongly encourages the use of the Super Visa program, which allows parents and grandparents to visit family in Canada for up to five years at a time, with the possibility of extensions.
IRCC has emphasized its ongoing commitment to family reunification, which remains one of the central pillars of Canada's immigration system. The 2025 PGP is part of the federal government's broader strategy to support immigrant families and ensure they can build strong futures together in Canada.
Applicants are advised to check their email inboxes (and spam folders) regularly between May 21 and early June 2025 for an invitation from IRCC.
Stay tuned for further updates and official guides from IRCC to help ensure your application is complete and submitted within the timelines.
