Beyond Marks – Making the Right Career Choice After 10th
Choosing the right stream after Class 10 is one of the most important decisions in a student’s life. Science, Commerce, or Arts—each has its own path, opportunities, and challenges. But is it right to choose only based on marks? What if you realize later that you picked the wrong stream? These are real questions that many students and parents face. In this special discussion with Mr. Pawan Uppal, founder of Wise Mind Career Counselling, we explore how to make better decisions when it comes to stream selection and career planning.
The Most Important Question to Ask
Before deciding on a stream, students should ask themselves: What are my interests and strengths? Instead of just going by what friends are doing or what others expect, it’s important to know what excites you. Whether it’s solving math problems, writing stories, understanding how businesses work, or exploring human behavior—your stream should match your personality and interests.
Is It Right to Choose Based on Marks?
Marks do matter, but they should not be the only factor. Many students who score well in science subjects are pushed into the science stream—even if they have no real interest in it. Mr. Uppal explains that aptitude, interest, and long-term goals are just as important. A student who scores average marks in science but loves drawing or music might be happier and more successful in the arts.
What If You Choose the Wrong Stream?
It’s okay to make a mistake—many students realize after a year that they are unhappy with their choice. The good news is, switching streams is possible, especially with the flexibility of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which allows students to mix subjects across streams in many schools. This gives students more control over their learning path and opens doors to new career options.
What Real Career Counselling Means
Career counselling is not just about picking a stream. It’s about understanding yourself, exploring different career paths, and making informed choices. A good counsellor helps students discover their abilities, guides them through career options, and supports them through doubts or pressure from parents or society.
Skills vs Degree – What Matters More Today?
In today’s world, skills matter more than just degrees. Employers look for people who can solve problems, think creatively, and work well in teams. A degree is important, but the ability to do the job well is what truly counts. Learning communication, coding, design, or even digital marketing can add great value to your career.
Should You Take a Gap Year?
Taking a gap year to think, explore, or prepare for competitive exams is not a bad idea. But it should be planned well. Use the time to learn something new, gain experience, or reflect on your interests. A gap year should help you move forward, not become a pause button.
Alternate Careers if MBBS Doesn’t Work Out
Not getting into MBBS isn’t the end. There are many other options in the medical and health field like pharmacy, physiotherapy, biotechnology, psychology, or hospital management. Explore them with an open mind—you might find a better fit.
Role of Parents
Parents play a key role. Instead of forcing their child into a certain path, they should help them explore options, understand their interests, and support them in making their own choices.
